Portal – Chapter 4

Eight Months AgoAfter the debacle of the sorority party, Michael focused solely on working as many hours as possible at the airport over the summer. His friends at school had left, returning to the relative safety of their own communities. No one stayed in the city unless they could not get out. He routinely asked for double shifts and was happy to receive the extra money. It helped Michael take his mind off the fact that he was an Enhanced. After his Reveal, when not working, Michael was secretly exploring his power. He figured out he could create  portals, two holes that appeared out of nowhere...

Portal – Chapter 3

One Year AgoMichael took another jello shot from the cute sorority girl. He had just finished his first year at the only community college in the state. The Greater Depression had already closed down many private four year universities, including nearby Butler and University of Indianapolis, and many public Indiana University campuses had closed to consolidate at Bloomington and Indianapolis. Purdue was barely surviving on government grants researching the Enhanced  while Notre Dame still had a large endowment and wealthy backers. Michael’s plan to work through two year community college...

Portal – Chapter 2

“The President laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery this morning marking the beginning of the day long memorial to the destruction of Los Angeles,” headlined the 24 hour news channel that was running at the courthouse. Michael arrived a half hour early to his court time so he had plenty of time to catch up with the news. His mom did not have a TV in the apartment and refused to buy one. He would often study at the library while in High School just to watch the occasional television. After his mom screamed at a friend’s mother in a drunken rage for letting Michael watch television,...

Creating the Big One

Read Portal - Chapter 2 before reading this blog post.I got a great email today about the big event in the Prelude of Portal. Hint: look at the background image of the website. I was told that the 'trigger' event is similar to Those Who Walk In Darkness by John Ridley. I've never read the book but now I will. The email inspired me to write more about how ideas developed and how they became story elements. So how did I decide to nuke Los Angeles? When I switched the story focus from supernatural to superhero (see the first blog post for why), I wanted a huge event that would be the source of human...

Portal – Chapter 1

Michael Larson’s alarm clock rang loudly, echoing in the entire living room. He used an old style wind up clock with a real bell that he found at Goodwill instead of a digital clock. Too many times the power had been shut off over the last year because his mother would not pay the bill. He had already been expelled from his local community college for his arrest but today was more important than a simple college class. He had a 9 a.m. court appearance at the Marion county courthouse in downtown Indianapolis. His court appointed lawyer had called the apartment manager yesterday, who left a message...

Welcome to The Enhanced Series

I would like to thank everyone that has joined to read Portal. A special thank you must go to Drew Hayes, author of Super Powereds and other stories at DN.So where did  The Enhanced Series come from? Actually, it has several sources. When I first outlined the story, there were no superheroes in it at all and the plot took a very different path. The main characters were supernaturals; mages, vampires, werewolves, etc. After I told my wife about it, she liked the idea but not the world (thanks Twilight for ruining horror monsters). I may return to that world someday with a new story but she was right.I...

Portal – Prelude II

Atomic Power was one of the great unknowns of the 20th century. His arrival as an Enhanced hero in the late seventies was met with skepticism. The early Enhanced were nothing like the heroes of the comic books. One of the first flyers named himself Superman. That moniker did not last long. He was sued by the large comic book company that owned the name and was ordered to pay millions. He had to leave crime fighting to others and become a local traffic reporter, giving updates as he flew over the city in order to pay his legal bills. After that debacle, many Enhanced hired intellectual property...

Portal – Prelude I

Two LAPD officers from Rampart Division responded to a disturbance at the Bank of California on the corner of Rampart and Wilshire Boulevards. The call had come in as an intoxicated man that was combative with the bank staff. As the officers entered the bank double doors, the first drew his yellow taser gun and aimed the red laser in the middle of the suspect’s back as he swung wildly at the elderly bank security guard. The suspect was wearing a broad striped tan and red sweater with khaki pants and his appearance was unkempt, especially with the balding patches of his stringy dirty hair. The second...
