Portal – Chapter 21

Justice surveyed the situation. He had defeated two Enhanced already but they were hardly worth his effort. He knew his fight with Lady Justice would be epic, but he hoped at least one of the other recruits would provide a challenge. Trauma’s sneaking around annoyed him more than anything, the life disks did not matter. Judge and Jury told him that the JTF was evaluating the mental toughness of the recruits and their ability to face unknown situations in this exercise. They wanted to break a recruit now before wasting time and taxpayer money on them. The music playing over the speaker was loud,...

Portal – Chapter 20

Agent Prescott was the first to notice the flickering problem in the system but did not think much about it. Lady Justice’s lightning was far more powerful than they had initially calculated. The EMP after-effect was fuzzing every computer system in the building, including the JTF server in the side room. Agent Edwards was busy monitoring the fight between Justice and Scimitar. “Scimitar, effective defensive skills but lacking offensive capabilities,” Edwards noted on his voice recorder. “Hostage-rescue or riot control. Oh, she’s sneaky. Hey Jay, check out Trauma. She just grabbed Scimitar’s...

Website Updates

In the end of Chapter 18, I mentioned some upcoming changes to the website. In case you are wondering, I'm using the Kingsize theme from Denoizzed. This is actually a media gallery style theme instead of a typical 'blogger' freindly design. In a previous blog post, I explained how I used plugins to change a few things in Wordpress to create a serial story in Chapter order rather than post date. The original Kingsize theme does not have a content area on the homepage, something I have needed for some time. I know it is not convenient to click in the story each time to see if a new chapter was posted...

Portal – Chapter 19

Michael could hear someone approaching his hiding spot. He thought he evaded his pursuer by doubling back downstairs to the basement. It was definitely not Justice, he was making a lot of noise on the floor above. It sounded like he was making new holes in the building. Cortex slowed down his pursuit and cautiously walked in the basement storage room. He had chased Recruit Larson from top to bottom of the BIT using Larson’s  fear as a beacon. He was used to it. Mundanes tolerated Enhanced because they had to but that did not mean they liked them all equally. Tanks, Flyers, and Elementalists...

Portal – Chapter 18

As the countdown started, Justice was disappointed. All of the rats had scattered. His primary rating was Tank, not a pure Speedster. He would have to chase all these specks of shit down one by one. At least Turbulence had the guts to stay with his girl. He knew Lady Justice was more than capable of taking care of herself so he did not worry about her. Right now, he was going to clean house and show the JTF personnel what a real Enhanced could do. The JTF supposedly created each recruit class with complimentary skills but Justice found this group very lacking . Net and Larson were just gnats...

Portal – Chapter 17

When the countdown started, Michael ran for the BIT. He knew only the recruits with the ability to fly or use long range powers would stay near the EUT. Although he did not relish the idea of being anywhere near Justice,  he knew his options were limited. In a one on one slugfest, his power was useless and he would get pounded by the higher rated Enhanced. He still had no idea the powers of the group  but he was determined not be the first to find out. Justice would be looking for him for some payback, that was a certainty. He had to make sure that when he went down, it was not by that prick....

Portal – Chapter 16

After two minutes, only two remained in the open area of the EUT. All the other recruits had scampered away in the BIT to find their own advantage but Turbulence and Lady Justice only wanted open space. “So it’s you and me, chica” said Turbulence flatly as both Enhanced began to rise off the ground. “The sky belongs to me, Lady Justice.” “We’ll see,” Lady Justice responded as Turbulence flew at her. Lady Justice liked the freedom of flight and enjoyed the cleaner air above, but she knew she doubted she could compete against a pure Flyer. An Enhanced like Turbulence had faster...

Portal – Chapter 15

“Welcome to the Hinkle close-quarter and urban combat facility,” said Agent Prescott proudly. “This building once held basketball games, but is now is one of the most sophisticated JTF simulators.” Michael looked at the building. It did not seem overly large for a sports arena but the semicircle roof and the red bricks were very typical of Midwest architecture. This was a true fieldhouse. For a moment, he wished he could have seen the Butler Bulldogs play basketball here. That would never happen since the team had been disbanded a decade ago when the school went bankrupt. As they walked...

Portal – Chapter 14

Michael sat and pondered her question. He grew up learning that the American way was both the most fair and unfair system in the world. Many of his college friends would protest the capitalist system and proclaim the socialist state, especially the model of Sweden, as the fairest. But even years after World War 2, Sweden was still practicing eugenics, a practice introduced on a large scale in Europe by the Nazis. Did more fair mean less freedom, even with something as basic as reproduction? The American way had been introduced all over the world with various degrees of success. Japan and Germany...
