Portal – Chapter 29

Dart was cradling his white helmet, almost like a baby, which Michael nicknamed Bug Head. The helmet was elongated along the front and back with a small antennae sticking out. Although it was white, Dart’s helmet was spotless. If he smashed any insects like a car windshield on the way in from Dallas, he cleaned them off sometime after landing. He was very proud of his gear. “The visor is retractable,” Dart said to his audience, the recruits and the dynamic-duo inside one of the many classrooms. “When up, it provides better field of view when you were hovering or performing a search and rescue....

Portal – Chapter 28

For the rest of the next week, the daily routine stayed the same for the recruits. Each morning at 5 am, they assembled outside the barracks for morning calisthenics and a 10 mile run with the dynamic-duo, the team suspension lifted after Michael returned. All powers were forbidden during PT but Justice was caught using his Enhanced-speed on the run. He was ordered to run the course again, blindfolded. After showering, the team attended three hours of classes on JTF procedures, weapon familiarity, Enhanced powers recognition, and then lunch. In the afternoon, the recruits attended individual Enhanced...

Portal – Chapter 27

Michael was still fuming inside when he arrived to the main JTF office after a short walk across campus. He did not know where the trainer offices were located so he asked the secretary he met a few days earlier. She rolled her eyes and huffed but eventually directed him to the offices. The door was partially open when Michael arrived, Justice standing in the middle of the room at attention. With near-Enhanced speed and precognance, Agent Edwards appeared in the doorway. “Larson, get your ass in here. Now!” he yelled. Michael noticed several heads look up from their cubicles, the JTF staff...

Portal – Chapter 26

The next morning, Trauma arrived at first light, discharged Michael from the infirmary, and walked him back to the recruit barracks. “They were really freaked out when you went down.” Trauma was filling in the gaps of  the events after the exercise. “Lady Justice started screaming for the medics. She yelled at Justice to get to the infirmary. When he didn’t move immediately, she was ready to light him up. She was seriously pissed.” Michael laughed a little. One thing he learned about this group, they do not take no lightly. “By the time Prescott and Edwards were in the room, Justice...

The Beginnings of a Lexicon

In a conventional science-fiction or fantasy book, there is often a lexicon at the beginning or end of the book. I'm working on a page with similar information for this site. Do the explanations make sense? Here is a sample:Enhanced - A person with extraordinary abilitiesMundane - A person with no extraordinary abilitiesReveal - The first time a power manifests for an Enhanced, usually between the ages 10-16. The age of Reveal is often used to estimate an Enhanced's category.Enhanced Damage Capability Category Scale (EDCCS) - Based off the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, the EDCCS...

Portal – Chapter 25

Michael slowly opened his eyes, feeling a stiff mattress and itchy sheets around him. The air in this room was cool so he guessed this was the infirmary, even before he opened his eyes and confirmed it. The windows were dark so only a few hours had passed since the exercise. “Well, look who decided to join the land of the living,” said a deep voice. Michael looked up to see a thin bald man with a white goatee looking back down at him. “Welcome back, Michael,” said a familiar voice. Trauma, was on the other side of the bed, her face showing relief. “Hi, Trauma,” Michael said weakly....

Portal – Chapter 24

Michael did not know what time it was but the sun was shining. He was outside on a hill, a white building behind him with three domes on it, an old observatory he remembered. A large city of steel and concrete stretched out below him as far as the ocean. He was here on a date to a laser light show and he was holding a girl’s, no, a woman’s hand. Her head was resting on his back Before he could turn around, he heard the sounds of sirens, hundreds of them, from the base of the hill. They were quickly moving away from the hill to somewhere important. Michael could see police, fire trucks, and ambulances...

Portal – Chapter 23

From the last announcement, Justice knew only Lady Justice and Larson were still in the simulator with him. Since Solid Copy had imitated Lady Justice in the BIT, Justice guessed the real Lady Justice was likely outside near the EUT. As he walked out, he saw that Turbulence and Net were both down. His girl was good. He wanted her to wait here as he went looking for Larson. The two strongest would battle for team leader and solidify Team Justice dominance. First though, he had to go squash a bug. He never saw the lightning coming. Justice first felt the heat of the bolt and felt his body fly backwards...

Portal – Chapter 22

Net was finally happy. He was streaming classic rock over the PA system in an effort to hide his movements. He was hoping that Justice and Lady Justice practiced in a gym or dojo with few distractions. He added the synthesized voice just to piss off Team Justice. Net did not think Larson was a threat to him unless they got in a fist fight. He had found several police reports about a Michael Larson of Indianapolis engaged in altercations with his mother’s boyfriends. Larson was no Justice, but he was impressive by his resilience before his Reveal. At school, Terrence was teased and harassed a few times,...
