Reviews at Web Fiction Guide

I found some reviews of Portal over at Web Fiction Guide a few days ago. I want to thank misve, anonymous, Paragon, and Tempest for giving Portal stars. Paragon and Tempest even wrote short reviews of the story with what they like and don't like . All well-reasoned critiques are helpful and appreciated.Without giving away spoilers, I hope the end of Portal and the sequel will address some of the concerns in the reviews. Not all of the chapters are linear by design and will explore events in the past that influence the present (like Chapter 68). I have sprinkled a few hints throughout Portal that...

Portal – Chapter 68

24 years ago“Where will you go?” she asked.Thomas looked up, his chiseled face red with anguish. He told himself that he had to be strong. This was not the life for him. He needed to get away from the military. He was leaving San Diego and moving to Los Angeles. His unit had trained with the SWAT teams in urban warfare at Camp Pendleton over the last few weeks. During one of the live fire exercises, he bullseyed a shot that even the SWAT snipers said was impossible. Thomas mentioned that his enlistment time was up and he was looking for new opportunities. The LAPD offered him a huge...

Portal – Chapter 67

"Who is he?" she demanded."Hello, Elizabeth," Daniel responded as the door to his office flew open. Elizabeth had ignored the secretary as she targeted the Director’s office like a missile. Daniel expected her to visit after the briefing. He also expected her very agitated. As usual, he was right."You didn't recognize the face? Surely his mind told you everything.""Dammit Daniel, don't screw with me. That category one just forced me out of his mind and attacked me. I'm certain the recruit mentalist heard it, probably every mentalist within a mile did."As she spoke, Daniel watched...

Designing the PCS Logo

If you are interested in how I designed the logo for the Pen and Cape Society (PCS), check out the article I posted at PenandCapeSociety.com on the process including rough sketches and design considerations. This is the same process I use to build the graphics here at ThePenintheStone.com.Designing the PCS Logo - PenandCapeSociety.com

Thank You Readers!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who visited us yesterday (and visiting today). The site had a huge boost after the opening of PenandCapeSociety.com. PCS was a lot of work to build but also a great experience. All of the authors involved are extremely talented and interesting with their own spin on superheroes (a little more heroic than my Enhanced). For all the new arrivals that may have found the site on PCS or through another author, welcome! I hope you enjoy The Enhanced Series and check out the Portal Characters Gallery.

Portal – Chapter 66

“Recruits, atten-shun!” shouted Agent Edwards to the recruits sitting in the classroom. In one fluid motion, the nine recruits stood up as one, their heels snapped together and fists closed at the side. “We have a very special guest today and you will pay attention. She has captured more Enhanced than most of you will ever meet. Crawfordsville was nothing compared to some of the shit storms this woman has walked out of. Now shut your mouths and listen carefully.”As Jury walked in, she smiled at the recruits. “There is no need for that. We are all members of the same team now. Please...

Pen and Cape Society now open

I mentioned a new project I was working on last week. It is a new website for a group of authors called the Pen and Cape Society (PCS). We are group of authors with a passion for writing superhero stories and for some reason, they let me in. Sometimes it pays to know the right people and slip them some Benjamins.Anyways, the design of the website will be discussed in a shared post with PCS another day, but I used a new WordPress template and designed an entire color scheme and two new logos. It was also the first time I used Illustrator for my visual work. I made The Pen in the Stone logo in Flash...

Portal – Chapter 65

As the large twin propellers of V-22 Osprey rotated from the forward to the up position, Elizabeth grabbed a cargo net to hold herself steady. She could use her power to hold herself upright but mundanes generally frowned upon using powers in aircraft. They were so timid and frightened of things they did not understand but she followed their rules. She hated riding in the Osprey. She wanted to take her private jet, a gift from her husband many years ago, but he persuaded her to fly down in one of the JTF’s aircraft. It would look like she was flaunting their wealth to travel the two hundreds...

Portal – Chapter 64

“As I said, Lieutenant, I cannot clear Recruit Larson for duty until we clear up these test results.”Preacher and Lieutenant Caldwell had spent the last fifteen minutes arguing about the medical report in Caldwell's office after Preacher was called in to explain his conclusions. Michael maintained parade-rest as the two old warriors battled it out.“I understand your concerns, Preacher, but I will not leave another man behind. Crawfordsville took a huge toll on my guys. We don’t have the replacements, even with the support from other units. With the Freemen uprisings, the other JTF offices...
